Squaw Valley Statement

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Public Relations Director, Liesl Kenney released a statement addressing concerns about the water quality at Squaw Valley Upper Mountain.


In it, he laid out the facts about Squaw Valley’s upper mountain’s water quality.


Firstly, the contamination was limited to only one of the water systems, the one which services both High Camp and Gold Coast. This is not a complete contamination.


Secondly, the contamination was caused by a system upgrade that was done in response to the havoc wreaked by unusually heavy storms. Their water system was not the only one in Placer County to need an overhaul after the spell of bad storms.


The contamination never reached the public for consumption, but that didn’t stop Squaw Valley officials from taking all precautions and safety measures. Kenney was quoted as saying, “The safety of our customers is paramount to us. We take this issue very seriously, as we do all safety issues at our resort. While this issue is being resolved, our guests at High Camp and Gold Coast will have normal and full access to our facilities…”


They found the contamination during routine maintenance and testing, and immediately contacted several leading water safety experts, as well as Squaw Valley Public Service District and Placer County Environmental Health.


The resort is still operational and now offers free bottled water to all of its guests until the matter with their water is resolved. They will keep their customers updated with any changes, and will alert all guests as soon as it’s safe to drink the water again.

Betsy DeVos nomination and subsequent appointment as the Secretary of Education recently sparked off debate about her and her husband’s philanthropy. The couple donated about $11.6 million to charity in 2015 alone. Compared to their campaign donations, 2015’s charity contribution are about twice of the couple’s political donations spanning five years back.


A Smoke Screen?

The report by Forbes on Dick and Betsy DeVos came at a convenient time for the couple and specifically Betsy DeVos who was then nominated to the education secretary position. The couple hails from a family with a long history of involvement in Republican politics. Dick DeVos’ dad, Richard DeVos, in particular, is an active participant in the party and U.S. politics in general. Betsy DeVos’ father and extended family is also reputable for its generous political and charitable donations.


Additionally, many critics argue that their generosity towards education organizations pushing for reforms is geared towards their business interests. Dick and Betsy DeVos are supporters of voucher and charter schools which rely on government funding to operate. Critics fear that the schools are channels of siphoning tax dollars and accuse the DeVos of having a financial interest in the increasingly popular education system.


The couple, however, has denied any claims to deflecting attention from its political donations by pointing out the numbers. To date, for instance, the DeVos extended family’s charitable donations add up to about $1.33 billion.

People know that their trusts will be safe, secure and managed well and according to the law.
